[Insert witty, fantastic setting details here. Seriously, all you really need to know is that it's a festival. A MONTH LONG festival with Fireworks happening every night once Darkness falls.]
[Sephiroth blinks up at the man, momentarily distracted from his ambitious plans to explore and experiment. He could easily jump away. He's confident in his ability to elude or deal with any opponent, but there's no reason to flee, and Sazh is new and interesting, too, so he stays.
Huh? [ Sazh is noticing something here, and leaning in a little closer and ] What the... well that's something you don't see everyday.
[ Cat eyes. Freaky. What the kid's saying is kind of weird too. ]
A professor? Like, uh, a doctor or something? [ Eye doctor? He scratches the back of his neck as he stands up and looks around. No obvious professor-types he can see. ]
[Hmm, technically, he's not supposed to talk about the project, especially not with someone who doesn't have clearance. He answers the question anyway. There's no one to stop him, and he's feeling a bit rebellious in this new environment.]
The professor is a research scientist. [It's a very polite form of rebellion.
Oh no, but he doesn't want anyone to look for the professor. Sephiroth glances around himself as Sazh does, but there's no sign of Professor Hojo anywhere in the vicinity. Good.]
Oh, ah--it's nothing. [ he really shouldn't have blurted that out before. actually telling a kid their eyes are freaky would be pretty rude. ]
Scientist, huh... [ It rubs him wrong on a personal level, having a kid stuck with a scientist. Maybe it's innocent, but--he just doesn't know. ] What about your folks, kid? I mean, parents and all.
[Sephiroth doesn't ask again when Sazh doesn't answer.
He's soon distracted by Sazh's own question. It's a question he doesn't have the answer to, and he doesn't like not having an answer. He is well aware of parents as a concept and a biological reality, but it's a concept he feels no personal connection to. He'd say he has no parents, but that's not technically true, as everyone has biological parents. It's his information that's lacking. He only knows his mother died.
Again, he technically shouldn't be answering, but he doesn't see the harm. Perhaps he's overconfident, but the novelty of talking to someone new takes precedence over protocol right now, and there's no sign of hostility from the stranger.]
I am in the care of the professor and Science Research Department.
Yeesh. You sound like you were brought up by a research department. [ SO FORMAL, SEPHIROTH. ] You're not pulling my leg, right?
Look, not that I'm trying to get you in trouble or anything, but you look a little young to be wandering on your own. Not even that much older than Dajh.
[He nods.] That's correct. [He was always in the care of Science Research. He's not sure how he sounds different, he's speaking properly.]
None of the researchers are here. [There's no one else authorized to look after him. No need to worry, as far as Sephiroth is concerned. He's not worried. He believes he's every bit as capable as any adult. He's confident that he'll be fine, and he's even eager to try being on his own.] I can operate independently. I won't be in trouble.
Oh, suuuuure. You say that. [ Now, is it true? Then again in the state of things Sazh can't exactly take over caring for a lost kid.
Making sure he stays out of trouble while he's around might be a different case. ]
Well, Mr. Independent, you know how to operate with a partner? Festivals aren't half as fun by yourself. [ He offers his gloved hand. ] Name's Sazh Katzroy.
[Why would he speak improperly when he knows how to speak properly? That wouldn't make any sense.]
I am. I'm trained in many forms of combat. [He says this with confidence. He knows he's much stronger and faster than ordinary humans. Obviously this means he'll be fine on his own. However, he doesn't have the most extensive experience with ordinary social situations.]
A partner? No. [He shakes his head slowly. He hasn't worked with a partner before, but it does sound like a good idea, especially as this is a new situation and an unfamiliar location. SOLDIERs work with comrades, and a partner could be useful. He takes Sazh's hand in his own, his grip firm.] My name is Sephiroth. I've never been to a festival before.
You know what? I believe you. [ Which is sad, Sephiroth. Especially on the combat bit... which goes straight from sad to deeply troubling. ] That means [ Straightening up, ahhh-- ] there's games you need to be introduced to!

[ Sazh is weirded out enough to be back in Bodhum...but something else's not right. He takes a look around them before looking back at Sephiroth. ]
Kid, aren't you missing someone here?
no subject
He nods.]
Yes. The Professor isn't here.

This mention of "games" does catch his interest. He likes games. He brightens.]
What kinds of games?
